Kumusha Chenin Blanc 2021
Breedekloof, South Africa
After fleeing from Zimbabwe with his family and settling in South Africa when he was 11, Tanashe Nyamudoka started working in restaurants and worked his way up to the front of the house and finally all the way up to lead Sommelier and running the wine program at a Michelin Star awarded restaurant… honestly I could go on and on about this amazing man’s story… Let’s just say, it’s awe inspiring. Kumusha means “your home” or your roots” and was designed by Tanashe to showcase the grapes of SA, as well as the different soil types within their growing regions. Sourcing from organic farmers and blending his wines with integrity, Tanashe is one of my favorite producers in the world right now.

Barnard Griffin Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
Columbia Valley, Washington
In 1983 Rob Griffin and Deborah Barnard started a winery in one of the greatest AVA’s in the world for wine, the Columbia Valley. They wanted everyone to be able to have a great glass of wine, regardless of their budget. The winery in fact, took the first price increase on their wines in 15 years because they literally had to. It’s cool to see good people making good wine. Not to get rich, but so that their daughter Meghan, who’s now a second-generation winemaker at Barnard Griffin, can continue the family business and give the people great experiences at fair prices.

Carol Shelton’s Wild Thing Zinfadel 2019
Sonoma, California
Here’s another one I’ll have to try super hard not to gush over... Carol Shelton… I kinda get teary-eyed when I talk about her, to be quite honest. Graduating from UC Davis in 1978 as one of the first female enologists, she was told that women can work in the cellars with the men winemakers… luckily, she didn’t give up and go back to being a poet, and after 22 years of working for wineries in Australia and throughout California, and after falling in love with Zinfandel, she and her husband Mitch started Shelton-Mackenzie Wine Company and the rest is history. Carol has been called “the most awarded winemaker in the America” -regardless of gender- and she continues to dominate the world of Zinfandel.
