This week we’ll be in the good ol’ Pacific NW with three wines from Columbia Valley, Washington and one Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley, Oregon all made by winemaker Stephen Webber at Montinore Estate Winery which began in northern Willamette Valley back in 1982. Stephen came on staff as the head winemaker back in 2006 and has since been making traditional Oregon wines like Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay, but is also well known for making very non-traditional wines from varietals not typically seen in the Willamette. A few years ago, after discussing how to branch into other areas of the PNW, and after opening a tasting room in Woodinville, Washington, they made some friends and bought some fruit from Red Mountain and Waluke Slope and sent it down to Oregon to see what Stephen would make of it! They were not disappointed and just then, the Cataclysm brand was founded! Cataclysm refers to the ice age and flood that occurred after the subsequent melting of all that ice which carved out the PNW 20,000 years ago, giving us nearly perfect grape growing conditions today and giving us wines that are “true to the land and hands that made them.”
