Altos de la Hoya Monastrell 2019
Jumilla, Spain; $13.99
This vineyard is special. All of the vines used for this wine are ungrafted original plantings pre-phylloxera. Phylloxera(insect) ran rampant through Europe in the late 1800s and wiped out nearly all of the grapevines. American vines (Vitis labrusca – IE: Concord) had developed a resistance to this pest, and now most of the vines of the world are grafted onto American root-stock. There are a few exceptions to this, one being caused by the extremely sandy soils of Jumilla. These 100+ year old vines create a unique instensity and a wonderful floral expression. This wine was produced to showcase the those ancient vines. Aged only six months in neutral French oak, much of which was huge 6000 liter foudres that allow the wine to breathe, but impart little to no oak flavor influence. The wine shows loads of fruit, with a spicy and floral complexity. – Sample $1.00
