We can’t possibly go a couple of months without a Paso Robles win tasting! Still in my opinion the best value and best wines of California. Rich velvety reds with good structure and tons of complexity. Grab your flight for $5!
Featured Wines:
1) Daou Sauvignon Blanc 2020
Paso Robles, California; $14.99
Simply put Daou is the most awarded winery in the Central Coast. Consistent 90+ scores on nearly all of their wines, and are one of the only wineries in the region to receive 100pt scores. The Sauvignon Blanc is a more recently addition to the lineup, but it had become a standout for Paso whites. Blended with a bit of Semillon and then aged a short time in French oak. Think Bordeaux Blanc… Peachy, lychee, grapefruit, and white blossoms. - Sample $1.50
2) J. Lohr “Wildflower” Valdiguie 2019
Monterey, California; $8.99
The name Wildflower actually comes from the Greenfield vineyards these grapes come from where the topsoil holds enough water to grow wildflowers among the vines. Made of 100% Valdiguie, a grape that was for many years identified as Gamay due to its similar qualities. J. Lohr mimics a lot of the same wine making practices common in Beaujolais with a combination of traditional and carbonic maceration fermentation methods. The wine hits you with a brambly wild berry quality up front, but finishes on the palate with a little pepperiness. An amazing lighter bodied wine, perfect Pinot Noir substitute, with much more complexity that other lighter wines at this price. - Sample $1.00
3) Rabble Red Blend 2019
Paso Robles, California; $14.99
Merlot / Cabernet Sauvignon / Petite Sirah
I love these labels… They are historic wood block prints from the Nuremberg Chronicle in the late 1400’s. The blend was originally named “Force of Nature”, and the label depicts the Apocalyptic Comet falling upon Florence.
“The nose blooms first with red cherry, ripe plum to dark raspberry with hints of anise seed and ending dusty suede. The palate is explosive, lush ripe fruits give way to supple tannin, layers of dark and bright berries with balanced acidty and firm yet restrained structure. The strong finish lingers of black tea and plum.” - Sample $1.50
4) Daou Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Paso Robles, California; $27.99
I figured it was time to throw a real banger into the lineup. The incredible list of accolades for Daou come from their just incredible red wines. Located out on the westside of Paso in 100% calcareous soil. With how hot it is the grapes get extremely ripe dense fruit flavors, but the soil helps to actually develop more acidity.
“…deep ruby-purple color and a nose of cassis, garrigue, charcuterie and sweet baking spices. The palate is medium-bodied, lifted and gently structured with grainy tannins and a good freshness, finishing long.” 92pts Robert Parker - Sample $2.50
