Once a year we like to celebrate the holiday season with a full flight of sparkling wines. This year we are featuring wines from Spain, France, and California. The selected sparklings come from historic and iconic producers of each region. Enjoy a Brut Nature Cava from a 100yr old sparking house. A Cremant de Bourgogne from the famed Boisset family. We follow that up with a rose from Schramsberg, the first producer of Blanc de Blanc and Blanc de Noir in America. The flight finishes with a classic true Champagne, the “La Cuvee” from Laurent-Perrier.

Cava, Spain’s answer to Champagne. Juve Y Camps is a historic producer dating back to 1796, but they didn’t produce their first sparkling wine until 1921. The family now owns and operates 2700acres of vineyards in Catalonia. The Reserve de la Familia is their most well-known Cava. Produced from a blend of regional grape varietals Macabeu, Xarel-lo, and Parellada from their Espiells, Can Massana, and La Cuscona estates. JCB by Jean-Charles Boisset “N°21” Cremant de Bourgogne Brut NV
Burgundy, France; $22.99
Jean-Charles Boisset.. Easily described as one of the kings of the wine industry. His involvement in the global wine community is more than can be listed here. Ignoring all the rest, the heart of the Boisset family is in Burgundy where his parents Jean-Claude and Claudine founded their family winery in 1961. Each number in the JCB collection signifies a wine style Jean-Charles strives to achieve in each bottling. N°21 refers to the French government’s “Department” number for the Cote d’Or, where Chardonnay and Pinot dominate the vineyards. Those varietals come together here for a dry sparkling with lots of stone fruit, lemon, white flowers, and a touch of ginger. – Sample $2.00
Schramsberg “Mirabelle” Brut Rose NV
California; $28.99
The Mirabelle Rose is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from a combination of Carneros, Anderson Valley, Sonoma Coast and Marin County in Northern California. It undergoes a classic secondary fermentation in the bottle, resting in Schramsberg’s historic Diamond Mountain caves for about two years. That heavier Pinot Noir shines with notes of light red berries, with a little toasty oak adding some hints of toasted nuts, graham cracker, and brioche. – Sample $2.50
Laurent-Perrier La Cuvee Brut NV
Champagne, France; $49.99
This iconic 200 year old Champagne house has consistently defined the region and style. They introduced stainless steel fermentation tanks to the region in the 1950s, revival of non-vintage rose Champagne in the 1960s, and resurrected the non-dosage Ultra/Extra Brut style in the 1980s. The “La Cuvee” is a 50% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 15% Pinot Meunier blend. It is mainly their 2009 vintage production blended with reserve selections from a few other vintages. With critic scores of 90+ from Parker, Spectator, Enthusiast and more it is no surprise we loved this one and selected it to top off the flight. Rich and creamy brioche notes with crazy complex fruit flavors from bright citrus to melon, currants, and apples. – Sample $5.00
