Inama Soave Classico- 2020
Veneto, Italy
Soave Classico is the hilly area where vineyards were planted during Roman times. It is uniquely suited for developing white wine with its volcanic soil: pure basaltic lava, the only area with these particular characteristics in Northern Italy. The area was originally planted with the ancient Graecanicum (meaning from Greece) variety. This name was then transformed into Garganega in the local dialect.
During the ‘60s Giuseppe Inama, the estate’s founder, began to purchase small plots of vineyards in the heart of the Soave Classico. Although Soave was the most famous Italian white wine worldwide, few producers really understood the importance of owning the best plots to secure a future of top-notch quality wines. The intuition of the founder was to foresee the potential of the Classico area to produce wines unrepeatable elsewhere. Mineral and floral wines, elegant and balanced to fully match the concept of a wine that goes beyond the market trends.

Substance Pinot Noir- 2021
Washington State
Winemaker Charles Smith, who made one of my favorite affordable Pinots ‘Golden West’, is now putting most of the fruit from the Golden West vineyard (which is situated on the Washington side of the Willamette Valley) into his Wines of Substance series and 2021 was a great year! There’s also about 15% of Pinot from Evergreen Vineyards which has a rich Washington history having been planted in 1998 by Jerry Milbrandt back when no one was thinking of growing Pinot in Washington. 30% whole cluster and 70% whole berry fermentation with native yeast and a 37-day skin contact maceration. 10 months in French oak with only a mere 5% of that being new. Light, bubble-gummy but in a way reminiscent of a memory of Double Bubble- not Bubblicious… gross. We’re grown-ups.

Vietti Barbera d’Asti- 2021
Piedmont, Italy
Right about now you’re probably thinking… “Heather, didn’t we have a Soave and a Barbera d’Asti on the tasting last week? Are you in need of help? Blink twice for yes…” Well, ok, but hear me out: THESE ARE PERFECT THANKSGIVING WINES! The gorgeous aromatics of Barbera, when paired with good food made with love, is unmatched. Vietti is a fourth-generation winemaking family, tending to their own land, hand harvesting their perfectly terroir-driven fruit in a tiny medieval village. What’s not to love?

Raeburn Cabernet Sauvignon- 2021
Sonoma, California
Comprised of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.5% Petit Verdot, and 9.5% Syrah, this is a juicy and youthful Cabernet. Perfectly suited for a rich meal, layered with blue fruit, spice and vanilla, ya know, like a Cab. Raeburn wines are made sustainably and crafted with grapes from some of Sonoma’s finest vineyards. Minimal French oak expression, with the main focus of this wine being on the cool climate fruit. A lovely buy.
