Francis Ford Coppola Wine Tasting

Originally built in 1973 as the former Chateau Souverain winery, Coppola purchased the winery in 2005 and the Francis Ford Coppola Winery was born. The plans were to create a winery that was more like a family destination and resort. With pools, sun bathing terrace, a performance pavilion and bocce ball courts there are lots of outdoor activities to get into on the property. The tasting room is also filled with tons of movie memorabilia including “Apocalypse Now”, “Dracula” and the Godfather series.

The wines are still the biggest priority. The winery and vineyards are both certified by the California Sustainable Winegrowers Alliance and were even awarded the Green Medal as part of the California Sustainable Winegrowing Leadership Awards.

Featured Wines:

2017 Diamond Collection Pavilion Chardonnay – Santa Barbara & Sonoma County; $16.99

One of the newest additions to the Coppola lineup of wines. This Chard is a blend of fruit from Santa Barbara and Sonoma County. The cool coastal style from Santa Barbara brings a crisp old world style acidity, while the Sonoma fruit brings more of a rich, vanilla style. This is a full-bodied style with a very creamy palate balanced by a hint of tropical fruit. Aromas of peach, pear and quince with 9 months in French oak adding some almond and vanilla. - $1.25 Sample

2017 Sofia Rose – Monterey County; $14.99

70% Syrah / 20% Grenache / 10% Pinot Noir

Named after Sofia Coppola, daughter of Elenor and Francis Ford Coppola. The grapes for this are harvested intentionally a bit early to retain some fresh acidity, but the wine wine is produced in a more feminine, round style. A perfume of fresh strawberries and lavender, this rose explodes with ripe, juicy flavors of cherry, raspberry and citrus zest. - $1.25 Sample

2016 Director's Pinot Noir – Sonoma Coast; $18.99

The Director's series specifically focuses on 100% varietal wines from the Sonoma Coast. No Syrah added to this elegant Pinot. This is a blend of mainly multiple different vineyards from the Russian River Valley. This area is perfect for fuller bodied style Pinot Noir, but with a balances of eathiness and spice. They even use a little bit of spicy Hungarian oak to add additional depth to the wine. - $1.25 Sample

2016 Diamond Collection Claret – California; $16.99

75% Cabernet Sauvignon / 21% Petit Verdot / 4% Petite Sirah

This is the third year in a row the Claret has received over 90 points, with a 91PT rating from Wine Enthusiast on this 2016 vintage. At one time the Claret was more of a balanced Bordeaux style blend, but these days every vintage is at least 75% Cabernet so that is labeled as “Cabernet Sauvignon”. The addition of Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah add lots of density, structure and color. After 14 months of aging in French oak this red is lush and silky smooth. Flavors of wild berries, plums and some anise. - $1.25 Sample
