Go ahead and judge a wine by its label in the instance of pretty much any wine from Protea. Deep color and resplendent aromas are immediate, but the full-rich palate with cherry, chocolate and spice are absolutely shocking when you realize it came out of such a pretty bottle!

Idlewild Flora & Fauna Red Blend 2022- $19.99/btl $2.50/taste

I’m low-key obsessed with Idlewild. Owner and winemaker Sam Bilbro is as obsessed with Piedmont, Italy as I am… and that’s all I’ll say on record about how I feel about Idlewild… This wine is great! It’s a red wine (obviously) but it’s a blend of Piedmont’s 2 most well-known varietals: Nebbiolo (red) and Arneis (white).  Dark cherry, iron, dried herbs and baking spices, but also graphite and violets. THIS wine is a wine that requires a little work to fully unravel its intricacies. It’s dark and brooding and young and light and tannic and “YOU JUST DON’T GET ME, MOM!” And I love it for that.
